Our community has been quite busy raising money to bring
back one of Portsmouth’s greatest icons - the train ride at
City Park. The original train - Pokey Smokey - was sold in
2005 and included the registered name. Therefore, the new
train will be named Pokey Smokey II.
The Portsmouth Community Foundation continues to raise funds
to purchase a new miniature train for Portsmouth City Park.
A replica of the 1863 C.P. Huntington train is a possible
replacement at an estimated cost of $212,000. Through
October 2008, $140,000 has been raised. APM Terminals
Virginia and Beazley Foundation both pledged $25,000
matching-gift grants. Monies raised beyond the cost of
replacing the train will be used to add to the train ride
experience.
If you’re interested in helping raise the money, call the
Foundation office at 757-397-5424. The Foundation's website
contains the most up to date information -

including a running total, list of donors, information about
committee meetings, and information about community efforts
and events to raise money.

Neighborhood Beautification Program
The Portsmouth Neighborhood Beautification Program creates a
partnership between participating neighborhoods and the City. It
serves to benefit both the City and the neighborhood by
providing a means for neighborhood entrances and green spaces to
be maintained attractively, in an efficient, cost effective
manner.
The program is based upon a formal contractual agreement between
the City and neighborhood groups. The objectives of the program
are to improve the appearance of public neighborhood green space
and create neighborhood stewardship of the area, while fostering
a sense of unity between the City and the neighborhood.
